Dave Grohl

This video is a little tongue in cheek, but it has an essence of truth in it – and it might just be the missing piece in your songwriting puzzle.

Dave Grohl on how to write a ‘hit’. Most white people dance to the lyrics, so make it something heartfelt. The chorus should be like a bumper sticker. Keep it simple:
‘life’s a bitch…life’s a bitch…life’s a bitch…but keep on trucking.”

The other idea is “don’t bore us to get to the chorus”. Aerosmith churn out the hits because they are nearly all chorus – they start with a chorus. It’s Chorus, churus, prechorus, chorus. Think about “Love in an elevator”, or “Janie’s got a gun”.
